President Donald Trump was briefed in the Oval Office on Wednesday after one of the doctors treating him for the coronavirus said the president had been "symptom-free" for more than 24 hours.
Trump, who had just returned to the White House from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center two days earlier, was briefed in the Oval Office about stimulus talks and Hurricane Delta, a spokesman told reporters.
NBC News reported, citing a senior administrative officer, that Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and social media advisor Dan Scavino were in the room during the briefing with the president.
Earlier Wednesday, White House doctor Dr. Sean Conley, in a memo that Trump has been "symptom-free" for more than 24 hours and "fever free" for more than 4 days.
The president has not needed supplemental oxygen since leaving the hospital on Monday, Conley said.
"Notably, the president's labs today showed detectable levels of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies from labs taken on Monday," added the White House doctor.
Later that afternoon, Trump's report released a nearly five-minute video of the president speaking from outside the Oval Office about his health and his administration's response to the pandemic.
He said he had "urged" the Food and Drug Administration to give approvals related to viruses and suggested that a vaccine would not come before the elections for "political reasons".
"I think we should have it before the election, but honestly, politics is involved and that's fine, they want to play their games, it will be right after the election," Trump said.
Conley's brief memo did not contain any specific updates on the presidential drug regime. Trump has had numerous treatments since testing positive for the coronavirus last week, including the steroid dexamethasone, antiviral therapy remdesivir, and an antibody cocktail from Regeneron.
The memo included comments from Trump himself. "The president says this morning, 'I feel great!'" Conley wrote.
After the briefing, Trump tweeted that he "had just been briefed on the Hurricane Delta and was speaking to [Governor Greg Abbot] of Texas and [Louisiana Governor] John Bel Edwards."
Trump was hospitalized on Friday evening, hours after he announced on Twitter that he and First Lady Melania Trump tested positive for Covid-19.
He was released three days later and flown back to the White House on Marine One. The president, who may still be contagious, raised his eyebrows and drew criticism when he took off his mask on his return to the White House on Monday night.
Larry Kudlow, Trump's foremost economic advisor, refused to tell CNBC whether Trump wore a mask when he returned to work. Kudlow, who appeared on CNBC's "Squawk Box" Wednesday morning, also said Trump had been to the Oval Office the day before – but other White House officials were quick to disagree.
However, the White House later confirmed on Wednesday that Trump had been briefed in the Oval Office.
A growing number of people who work in the White House have also tested positive for Covid-19 following Trump's diagnosis. The list includes top household assistant Stephen Miller and press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, as well as some of their deputies and several members of the press corps.
Some Republican lawmakers who recently attended an event on the South Lawn of the White House – which defied some of the recommended social distancing guidelines issued by health experts in the Trump administration – also tested positive.
Upon returning from the hospital, Trump revived his active Twitter presence. On Tuesday, the president tweeted that he had ordered his aides to halt negotiations with Democrats on a deal for additional money for coronavirus stimuli until after the November 3 election. The move confused Wall Street investors and political experts alike. He later urged Capitol Hill to approve additional coronavirus relief in separate bills. He tweeted or retweeted more than a dozen times in the early afternoon on Wednesday.
