Krugman carefully dissects and rejects excuses made by Senate Republicans (under the auspices of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell) for failing to provide an aid package to the American people. The right insists that further aid would mean an implicit and undesirable recognition that government solutions are necessary in times of unprecedented crisis; that much of the requested aid would go to democratically governed states; and that further unemployment benefits prevent people from returning to unsafe work environments.
But none of these reasons make sense from a political point of view. Americans are still suffering in the millions, hundreds of thousands of companies are barely attached and national budgets are collapsing. This happens in every state, not just in "blue" ones.
And he points out that not only the Democrats but Wall Street itself are expressing the need for further incentives and funding for COVID-19 relief supplies. It is the Federal Reserve that is expressing its outrage at a president and Senate majority leader who has apparently given up any sense of economic reality.
As far as I can tell, no one has cited a plausible political motive. Refusing to even try to save the economy helps Trump's prospects. What that looks like instead is vengeance.
In order to conclude an aid contract, however, one would have had to accept a compromise with this "bad" woman Nancy Pelosi. And it seems he'd rather let the economy burn.
If this is Trump's stance now, and if – despite all his machinations, despite Attorney General William Barr's false witch hunts, despite his call for assistance from the Russian Federation, despite his threat of violence and refusal to accept the election results, and despite Die incessant propaganda from Fox News supporting and promoting this effort – he actually loses on November 3rd. What will his reaction be? And what will someone with Trump's vengeful attitude and total lack of human empathy do to sabotage or destroy the country in the final months of his presidency?
The most immediate concern is that he will not accept the election results. But we should also worry about what will happen if he is forced to accept the will of the people but still rules the country. Trump was always vengeful; What will he do when he's just defiant?
It seems we're all about to find out. One thing is certain, however: whatever avenges Trump will be felt by everyone. Not just from Democrats, whom he will see as the direct cause of his demise, but also from Republicans, whom he will see as failed.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will need your help every day until the election. We call on voters in swing states to help the entire democratic ticket. Register for 2020 Victory and call voters from the comfort of your own home. All you need is a computer, a quiet place to make those calls, and the determination to absolutely humiliate Donald Trump.
