Russian hackers have hacked state and local electoral systems, and officials say their goal may be to help Trump discredit the elections.
The New York Times reported:
Officials didn't make it clear what Russia was up to, but they said its operations would serve to help President Trump, possibly by exacerbating disputes over the results, especially if the race is too close.
There is no evidence that the Russians changed their vote count or voter registration information, officials said. They added that like in 2016, the Russia-backed hackers broke into computer networks without taking any further action. However, American officials expect that if the presidential race is not scheduled on election night, Russian groups could use their knowledge of local computer systems to deface websites, post nonpublic information, or take similar steps that will cause chaos and doubts about the integrity of the results could cause, according to American officials who were informed about the secret service.
The Russians have two related goals. You want to discredit democratic elections in the United States and help Donald Trump.
The methods Russia used to smear Hillary Clinton do not seem to work against Joe Biden, as social media companies and the free press do not spread the disinformation.
If the presidential election is approaching and chaos ravages the country, Russia will seek to step in to reinforce Trump's claims that the election is illegitimate.
The best way for the nation to avoid these scenarios is to vote Joe Biden overwhelmingly. If Biden wins Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Iowa or North Carolina, Trump's dreams of running the elections with Russian help are toast.
Trump needs an exact iteration of 2016 in order to translate all efforts to delegitimize the elections into serious action. If Biden flips a republican state or two, the whole scheme falls apart.
Threats like Russia's are the reason Democrats can't take their foot off the gas. It is not enough to be on the right track to win an election. Joe Biden has to win in such a way that the results are undeniable, which he can do by making a red condition or two blue.
