Schiff said on MSNBC:
First of all, I have to say that every time I see Michael Flynn, I snap a clasp to believe that this man was the head of Defense Intelligence. What he’s saying is completely normal, completely normal, and done 60 times in history. This is a military coup. That’s what he’s talking about. I refused to use the word “coup” but he speaks of a military coup. This may have happened 60 times in history, but it was done by dictators around the world, not in the United States.
Could the President do it? I don’t think the people around the president will go along with it. It would fail. But it would be such an additional devastating blow to our democracy that the fact that they maintain it is so pale. But this, too, is a man who has no moral compass. He’ll do the length and breadth of what people let him get away with. Unfortunately, he has had too many enablers in his own administration and Republicans in Congress, and that’s what actually breeds this kind of reckless talk.
Coverage of the Friday meeting suggests that his own advisers in the White House outside of the weirdos that Trump has surrounded himself with like Giuliani, Flynn and Powell are against the idea and have told Trump that he lacks constitutional authority to do so do what Flynn suggests.
It is worrying that so many Republicans are ready to work to destroy democracy. Even if the coup is unsuccessful, the fact that a president engages in such seditious behavior harms the nation’s democratic institutions.
