Night Owls, an open thread, is published seven days a week by Daily Kos

Scott Simon writes at NPR –It was the night before Christmas in 2020:

It was the night before Christmas and everything was in the house
The click stirred – most hectically – every mouse
All stockings were hung on the television with flair
But children played on apps in their rooms without a care
Smartphones and laptops sneak right into their beds
While visions of viruses danced in their heads
When I was out on the street, it rattled like that
I jumped out of bed to see what was going on
When what appeared to my wandering eyes
An electric sleigh without a reindeer

“Self-propelled,” said the driver, briskly and quickly
I knew from his TikToks that it had to be St. Nick
“I don’t scatter CO2,” he said, “on glaciers and meadows
So my polar bear friends can hang on their ice floes. “
He had a snow-white goatee and a six-pack belly
“I just couldn’t go on like a bowl of jelly.
Now I eat fruits and vegetables, meditate and do yoga
And don’t just watch e-sports – Elf Sports – on the sofa. ” […]

If you’re in the mood for another, here is the first verse of Niall O’Dowd‘s parody released on Irish Central:

It was the week before Christmas and all over the house

Republican congressmen acted like clowns.

Stand aside, filthy Biden, they screamed, fists pumped,

The winner is Donald and Biden, he trumped!

From here on they said he’s number one

The man in the White House sure isn’t finished yet.

We also won Wisconsin, Pennsylvania.

But Biden, he was trying to prove that one plus one is two.

But when we add the voices it’s clear to see

If Republicans count one plus one, it’s three.

So we’re the absolute winners (let the dems take their lumps)

It’s a victory for us and for the great Donald Trump! […]

Three articles worth reading

“I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all year round. I will live in the past, the present and the future. The spirits of all three will aspire in me. I’m not going to rule out the lessons they teach! ” ~~ Ebenezer Scrooge, “A Christmas Story”, 1843.

At Daily Kos that day in 2018– Small Businesses Likely to Suffer from Trump’s Shutdown:

Republicans are playing a good game of love for small businesses, but Donald Trump’s government shutdown shows once again how true this is not. Many small businesses are suffering from the closure. That includes those with government contracts who are exposed to interruptions, but it’s much bigger than that.

“R.After the shutdown in 2013, retail store traffic decreased an average of 7.3 percent per week compared to the same period last year, according to ShopperTrak Get data from CNBC, ”an effect that had a greater impact in areas like Washington, DC and its suburbs, where federal employees live, and near national parks, where fewer visitors were present.

Small businesses looking for government loans will also face problems as the administration is closed to small businesses other than civil protection services.
