Days after Missouri GOP Senator Josh Hawley announced he would object to certification of the 2020 election results, nearly a dozen Republican senators – led by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) – have formed a coalition of their own to support themselves to oppose certification by Electoral College Request an emergency audit.
Fox News: “A coalition of GOP senators and elected senators, led by Senator Ted Cruz, will object to the confirmation of the January 6th presidential election results when a joint congressional session meets next week, unless it is advised Emergency before 10 days of examination of the results by an electoral commission. “
In addition to Ted Cruz, the new anti-democracy coalition will include 10 current and future senators, including Wisconsin GOP Senator Ron Johnson, who can be re-elected in 2022.
Fox News reports, “Cruz – along with Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis .; James Lankford, R-Okla .; Steve Daines, R-Mont .; John Kennedy, R-La .; Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. And Mike Braun, R-Ind .; and Sens.-elect Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo .; Roger Marshall, R-Kansas; Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn. And Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala. – say the elections “contained unprecedented allegations of electoral fraud and illegal behavior”.
An idea so bad that even Mitch McConnell is against it
The scheme of blocking election results certification – a doomed exercise – is such a bad idea that even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opposes it.
Not only will this not stop Joe Biden from taking office on January 20th, but the Republicans who join will be forever registered as part of an attempted coup.
This may keep a handful of GOP senators on Trump’s side in the short term, but it will likely have catastrophic long-term consequences for a political party that implodes before America’s eyes – all for an accused president with a term in office.
