Rev. Raphael Warnock wins and defeats Senator Kelly Loeffler within the Georgia runoff

The Rev. Raphael Warnock is now the Senator-elected Raphael Warnock. He is set to defeat Senator Kelly Loeffler in one of the two runoff elections in Georgia.

Warnock, the pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, becomes Georgia’s first black senator. He kicked off the runoff campaign with one of the most memorable and effective ads of recent election cycles, and followed it up just as effectively with another one that used the same themes.

Loeffler was named to replace Senator Johnny Isakson when he retired. So it cannot be said that she lost re-election. Rather, it could never be elected – and it failed on the basis of a racist campaign in which it relentlessly turned to Donald Trump and the worst of his base. In a final ditch, Loeffler promised Monday night to join Republicans protesting the battlefield nation voter count won by President-elect Joe Biden. (And after it became clear that she was going to lose, she announced late Tuesday night that she would be traveling to Washington to keep that promise.)

A Democrat won the presidential race in Georgia. A black Democrat goes from the state to the Senate. Holy wow and a big thank you to Stacey Abrams, Nse Ufot and so many other tireless organizers.
