Four people died in the riots in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC on Wednesday, said Police Chief Robert Contee, as a horde of supporters of President Donald Trump tried to prevent the confirmation of Joe Biden’s election victory.

The deaths included a woman who was shot and another woman and two men who died from “medical emergencies,” said Contee, who spoke at a press conference Wednesday night.

The chief said the internal affairs department was investigating the shooting. Contee said they are still determining full details of the other three deaths.

At least fourteen police officers were injured and several were still in the hospital, Contee said. An officer was seriously injured when he was dragged into a crowd where he was attacked, he added.

“This is a tragic incident and I would like to express my condolences to the families and friends of the victims,” ​​said Contee.

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a curfew from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday. The mayor also announced an extension of a “public emergency” for the next 15 days, which would run through inauguration day.
