Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) immediately shut down Ted Cruz in the Senate Saturday after the Texas Senator lied about undocumented immigrants who received COVID aid payments.
“The Texas senator’s statement is just wrong,” said Durbin, refusing to give Cruz the floor.
“If you stand up there and say the opposite, you just have to upset people about something that is not true,” continued the Democrat. “You want to be able to make speeches saying checks are going to undocumented people.”

Senator Durbin said:
The testimony of the senator from Texas is simply wrong. Not correct. Let me be clear: undocumented immigrants do not have a Social Security number and cannot qualify for stimulus relief checks. And in case you didn’t notice, they didn’t qualify back in December when 92 of us voted for this measure, and they didn’t qualify for the American bailout plan. Nothing has changed, and if you stand up there and say the opposite, all you have to do is upset people about something that is not true. … It is not true. And we know what’s going on here. You want to be able to make speeches stating that checks are going to undocumented people. … No money for undocumented people under the American rescue plan.
Republicans hope bigotry can save them
The more Americans learn about Joe Biden’s American rescue plan, the more popular it becomes. This reality has bonded Republicans when they defied the legislation.
Whether Cruz falsely whines about undocumented immigrants receiving stimulus checks or Marco Rubio causing a seizure over transgender rights, Republicans are hoping bigotry can save them.
But no number of cultural war diversions will erase the fact that the Republican Party is about to oppose significant relief for the American people.
