Roger Stone, former political advisor to former President Donald Trump, is being examined for his connections to members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys who participated in the January 6th Capitol riot.
Stone did not participate in the storming of the United States Capitol, which came after Trump urged a crowd of his supporters to scrap the 2020 election results on the unfounded assumption that the elections were fraudulent. But he joined a “rally to save America” in Washington DC, in which he pushed for an “epic struggle for the future of this land, between dark and light, between divine and wicked, between good and evil”.
The Guardian reported that Stone “was seen on cell phone videos near a Washington hotel with six members of the right-wing Oath Keepers militia serving as his “bodyguards.” In addition, Stone raised money for “private security” events prior to the riot with Trump, which further fueled his false election claims.
Stone has remained a top ally of Trump: last year, Trump insisted on Stoneas the victim of a corrupt and illegal witch hunt that will go down as the greatest political crime in history. “
Stone was convicted of lying during a testimony before the House Intelligence Committee in September 2017 to hide the role he played in the Trump campaign’s attempt to learn about Democratic computer files hacked by Russia in 2016 published by WikiLeaks to harm Hillary Clinton.
