Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) complained that Democrats are ruining the Senate by potentially gutting the filibuster to stop mass shootings.
Toomey said on NBC’s Meet The Press:
Some of our Democratic counterparts are simply making a shameful attempt to really ruin what remains of how the Senate works, and this will cause long-term damage to the country. You know, two years ago, the Democrats pretty much supported keeping the filibuster going. Barack Obama was for the filibuster. Now, when the other party is in control, has it suddenly become a racist tool? How ridiculous. The fact of the matter is the bill passed by the House – that doesn’t even have 50 votes in the Senate. Joe Manchin has been shown to be against it. So there aren’t even 50 votes. You could get rid of the filibuster tomorrow and you still might fail that bill.
So we have to try to find a place where we can land, a place where there is something in common. I have long believed, as I have told you many times before, that the place we should be accomplishing this required background checks on commercial sales. I know there that Senator is Manchin. And there are Republican senators interested, not because it’s a bank shot to stop the Democrats from abusing their power over the filibuster, but because there’s substantial support.
Senator Toomey was due to tell the families of the ten innocent people, including a Colorado police officer who died in Colorado, that preserving the Senate is more important than saving American lives.
The problem with Toomey’s whining is that his path has already failed. Toomey and Sen. Manchin failed to pass bipartisan law to expand background checks. There is no legal “landing pad” in the Senate where ten Republicans will support the expansion of background checks.
Democrats have tried for decades to get better gun laws that would help keep guns out of the hands of mass shooters, and it’s always the same game. Republicans pretend to want to do something and to vote against the legislation.
Senate Democrats believe human life is worth more than the filibuster, which is why they are ready to make changes to do something about the plague of mass shootings that is killing the American people.
