On Thursday, in a rare act of non-partisanship, Reps John Katko (R-NY) and Henry Cuellar (D-TX) tabled bill that would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to come up with a plan to deal with surges creates illegal immigrants coming across the US southern border.
The Border Surge Response and Resilience Act would also create a “Fund for Responding to Border Crossings in Irregular Migrations”.
The fund could be activated at the border depending on the situation.
People can now see the full extent of the humanitarian crisis on our border. Facilities are overcrowded – 17 times the COVID-19 capacity. The Biden administration could have prevented this. # BidenBorderCrisis.https: //t.co/YkjLMF4j8x

Help with the border patrol
Both lawmakers seemed confident that new laws, if passed, would give a big boost to the border patrol, which is now reaching its limits.
So much so that the Associated Press reported that some illegal immigrant families in the United States are being released with no trial or no paperwork at all.
In a statement, Katko said: “After hearing firsthand from border guards, it is clear that they need agency support and accountability within the federal government to adequately manage border crossings.”

MP Cuellar also released a statement: “This bipartisan legislation will allow the federal government to use a state-wide approach to create a response framework that anticipates waves of migration and allows them to quickly shift resources and take immediate action to mitigate a humanitarian response to seize crisis. “
Cuellar, a Democrat, was one of the few in his party who spoke out on the situation on the border.
Cuellar was less than happy with the Biden administration. Recently he said: “I am on the Homeland Appropriations [Subcommittee]. I get more information from across the river than from my own government, which is amazing. “

The borderline situation continues to deteriorate
The emergency at the border is not going away.
In a video released Wednesday by Customs and Border Protection, two toddlers, ages three and five, are being dropped over a 14-foot barrier by people smugglers. Border guards found the girls and as a precaution they were taken to a medical facility and then to a hospital.
In another worrying incident, smugglers threw a 6-month-old girl into the Rio Grande. The smugglers attacked the mother while the couple were still in Mexico.
The baby was pulled out of the river and, according to Newsweek, is “safe” with its mother in border custody.
Mexican immigration authorities said they found a 4-year-old Honduran boy who appeared to be wandering alone in an area near the Rio Grande. How he got there was not clear. He was placed in the care of Mexican child protection officials. https://t.co/3ePMh5ba4F

Senators on the border
A delegation of US Senators went to the border last week to see the situation for themselves. While the Biden administration was still trying to prevent photos or media coverage from getting out, the senators talked about what they saw.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) described the conditions as “inhuman”. Many members of the delegation spoke about the extreme crush amid the COVID-19 logs.
Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) spoke about a meeting between border officials and people smugglers across the Rio Grande. The smugglers yelled and harassed the agents in Spanish, saying that no matter what they did, they would keep crossing the border.
