Former Trump official fined and banned from authorities work for violating the Hatch Act

The US Office of Special Counsel announced that former senior Trump HUD official Lynne Patton has been fined and banned from government work for violating the Hatch Act.

About the US Office of Special Counsel:

The U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) today announced a settlement agreement with Lynne Patton, a former Trump administration political appointee who served as Region II administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD ) was active. As part of the deal, Patton admitted violating the Hatch Act by using her official position to produce a video about housing conditions for the Republican National Convention (RNC).

As a HUD employee, Patton received permission to temporarily live in the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) in early 2019 and observe their living conditions. Patton met residents during their approximately month-long residency and later used one of those relationships to attract attendees to record a video to be broadcast on the RNC. Patton wanted NYCHA residents to appear on the video to explain how their standards of living had improved under the Trump administration.

Taking advantage of information and NYCHA connections made available to her solely by virtue of her HUD position, Patton improperly used the authority of her federal position to support the Trump campaign in violation of the Hatch Act. Under the terms of the Settlement Agreement, Ms. Patton admitted she engaged in behavior that violated the Hatch Act’s prohibition of office and agreed to accept a 48-month federal employment write-off and a $ 1,000 fine to pay.

The corporate media tried to see the Trump administration’s misuse of public resources for partisan purposes as the new normal, but there was nothing normal or legal about what Trump and his administration did.

Hopefully this won’t be the last punishment announcement to former Trump officials for violating the Hatch Act. The way to prevent future administrations from behaving is through enforcing the law.

The Trump era of lawlessness is really over.
