US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Tuesday that “racism is an American problem”.
President Joe Biden’s AG made a statement during an ABC News interview with Pierre Thomas.
AG Merrick Garland told ABC News: “Racism is an American problem. I understand that African Americans have been and remain discriminated against. We don’t have the same legal justice yet.”

AG Garland refuses to comment on the chauvin process
While not referring to the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial when asked, Garland said, “I intend to wait for the verdict before I speak and I would ask the American people to do the same.”
Garland’s response here differs from other politicians who commented on the case prior to the verdict – including President Joe Biden and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.
When host Thomas Garland asked if he “believes there is bias and racism in law enforcement,” Garland replied, “Racism is an American problem.”
Garland added, “I think that … um … I realize that there has been and is discrimination against African Americans and other color communities as well as other ethnic minorities.”

“I think this is reflected in the discrimination in housing and employment as well as in the judicial system. … We are not yet legally equal, ”said Garland.
Garland also addressed the street violence that plagued the summer of 2020: “I also saw the videos all summer last summer.”
Garland: “A lot of black Americans weren’t shocked”
Garland added, “I felt there was a chance, at least from last summer, to bring this to the fore in the national consciousness and create a moment where we could change.”
“And like many Americans, I was shocked. But many black Americans weren’t shocked because they knew about this type of treatment, ”the AG continued.
“And one reason I wanted to become the attorney general was to help make that change,” he added. “All of us in our families feel obliged – in the public service – and try to protect other people as the country has protected us.”

Garland said that in his role as attorney general, he would have “an opportunity to do some very important things. I now have the opportunity to head a civil rights justice ministry. “
“I have the ability to run a Justice Department to enforce the rule of law and to ensure the independence of the Department and its independence – in particular – from any party political influence over the way we investigate or prosecute,” Garland concluded.
