Tucker Carlson always said controversial things on his popular Fox News show. Every few months he seems to have a scandal that costs the network a number of sponsors.
But since Donald Trump’s defeat in November, Carlson has been further and further from the deep end. He was outraged in April when he pushed the white Supremacist Great Replacement Theory.
And the Fox host got off the rails last week when he talked about using face masks to protect against COVID-19. Carlson urged his viewers to call child protection services and parents whose children were wearing masks.
Despite his radioactivity, Fox staff say he will never be fired because his ratings are simply too high.
The Daily Beast interviewed a number of Fox employees about Carlson. One employee said: “He’s a great example of how much you can get away with at Fox when your ratings are high. Apart from that, he just perpetuates the right-wing’s disaster platform. They can’t win with their supposedly limited government, fiscal conservatism, because even they don’t really believe in it. All they do is be scared. “
“T.The Murdochs love him, ”said another employee. “Like her, he’s a rich, prep school kid born with a silver spoon. He deals in populism while living in an expensive ivory tower and in real life never meets the people he brings together for reviews.”
And a third employee noted that the sponsors don’t really matter. “The dirty little secret is that FNC doesn’t care about losing advertisers. They make their living from cable conglomerates who pay them a lot of money so stupid people who worship FNC can continue to be told what they want to believe in their hearts – and that is a lot of people. “
