Opinion: Cowardly Republicans are asking President Biden to do what they refused to do underneath Trump

For four long years, Republicans across the country stood idle and flattered Trump, even though he did immeasurable damage to the nation, its relationships with its allies, and caused no small economic damage to many American industries. Meanwhile, Republicans pretended not to know the damage Trump’s incompetence had done to their constituents because they were too cowardly to use their constitutional authority to stop the madman.

However, now that there is a Democrat in the White House, the same Republican bootlickers who have failed to separate their inlets from Trump’s grease outlets are appealing to President Joe Biden to stop the “self-inflicted harm” they caused many major industries to Trump America’s standing with its allies for refusing to do their job.

News that several Republican senators had sent a letter to President Joe Biden asking him to undo the damage caused by Trump’s imposition of tariffs on America’s allies would have stayed in the news cycle for a few weeks, if not longer should. It received little more than a passing article or two, however, and it is a very curious thing indeed; because it amplified how Republicans were aware of the damage Trump was wreaking in real time and how they could have used their constitutional authority to stop him anytime they wanted.

Under the United States Constitution, which some Americans consider the law of the country, only the United States Congress can impose tariffs. Article 1 (8) clearly states:

“Congress has the power to collect and collect taxes, duties, levies and consumption taxes, to pay debts, and to provide for the common defense and common good of the United States; but all duties, taxes, and excise taxes are to be uniform in the United States; “and” To regulate trade with foreign nations and between different states and with the Indian tribes. “

Almost immediately after settling in a place he had no right to ever visit, let alone occupy, Trump took it upon himself to impose tariffs on our allies and withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Both moves were not only unconstitutional, they seriously damaged America’s ability to trade with foreign nations and put American industry at a disadvantage. Agriculture was particularly hard hit; and that doesn’t include the significant damage caused by Trump’s disastrous immigration policies.

Now Republicans are admitting that Trump’s illegal tariffs were a “self-inflicted wound” for America, so they appeal to President Biden to correct Trump’s catastrophic wrongdoing and do what they refused to do – their jobs.

While they had the common sense to admit that President Biden was right in condemning Trump’s actions, they never named him guilty or admitted their guilt for the disastrous Trump movements.

Nowhere in the US Constitution does Congress give the authority to transfer constitutional power from Congress to the executive branch. Republicans simply waived their duties to Trump, knowing that they would be catastrophic to American businesses, the agricultural sector, consumers, and the nation’s relations with their allies and trading partners.

In their letter to President Biden, Republicans said in part:

“Your administration has to evaluate the collective experience of the last three years and determine which guidelines have worked and which have not. As you said, the trade war has been damaging and catastrophic to many US companies. We agree that the federal government must immediately stop these harmful measures. We also endorse your government’s strategy of working more closely with allies. We believe this must be at the heart of any successful relationship-building effort and ultimately holding China accountable for human rights and trade abuse.

An important first step would be to dismantle trade barriers with our allies. With that we can stop harmful actions and retaliation, and improve relationships while listening to companies across the country that have suffered the negative economic consequences. We urge the administration to listen to the many stories from these companies and to end the self-inflicted damage from the trade war. ” (Author in bold).

It is worth reiterating that the letter signed by seven Republican senators nowhere mentions Trump’s name or an admission of guilt for renouncing their constitutional duty to either “impose tariffs” or “regulate trade with foreign nations “Complying with or stopping Trump from further harming America at home and abroad. For the dog’s sake, they had the best opportunity to kick the bum out during his first impeachment, but they didn’t.

Democrats would do well to be right in the middle of reminding the American people why Republicans had to crawl to President Biden to repair the damage Trump’s tariffs and immigration policies had done them. It is typical in America for a Democratic government to have to repair major damage after a Republican government hosed the country with incompetence and bad policies. But what’s not normal is Republican senators begging the Democratic government to undo the catastrophic damage allegedly inflicted on the man who was made god because the Republicans swore their sworn duties to some fascist madman.
