TX Governor Abbott breaks his silence to handle rumors that Matthew McConaughey will face him

Rumors have been circulating in recent months that Oscar-winning Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey is planning to run for governor of Texas. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) was asked about these rumors during his appearance on Friday’s Hugh Hewitt Show.

Abbott comments on McConaughey

While Abbott said there was “no doubt” that McConaughey was a good guy, he pointed out that the actor never took a clear political position on anything, at least not in public. He also warned McConaughey that if he took a conservative political stance, he could lose friends and popularity in Hollywood.

“[W]We knew each other [Matthew] and I have been for a long time, “explained Abbott. “Interestingly, we both grew up in Longview, Texas. We both went to the University of Texas. “

“We were actually both members of the same fraternity at the University of Texas, and we hung out together at a few University of Texas football games,” he continued. “And his wife was a frequent visitor to my wife and they’re friends, so yes, we know him.”

“And listen, there’s no doubt he’s a good guy,” he added. “He’s a great guy. He’s very committed, but there’s no doubt either that he never took a position on politics. And as people who really know what politics is about, your popularity as a Hollywood hero wanes once you start taking positions and people put you in one category or another. “

“[W]We just have to wait and see if he starts taking positions, ”Abbott said. “Is he for abortion or is he for life like me? Is he really going to step forward and do something about the most pressing problem in the state of Texas, and that is actually securing the border like I am? “

“Will he support efforts like I did to excuse cities that weaken the police?” he concluded. “All sorts of things that require you to be in some tough positions where … you make some friends and you win some enemies along the way.”
