With cases of COVID-19 in Florida increasing in the past few weeks, Ron DeSantis didn’t seem interested in doing anything to combat the problem. Indeed, the ambitious Republican has dug himself into culture war issues.
And while DeSantis is focused on schools and masks, Florida hospitals are becoming overloaded with COVID patients. During a monologue on Wednesday, Ari Melber described the governor of Florida as “the figurehead of COVID outages”.
The host began discussing DeSantis’ attempts to raise funds by telling Dr. Anthony beat up Fauci. “They squat both T-shirts and cuddly toys, ”he said. “For a governor in the midst of a deadly virus, the first point here would be to grow up.”
“What he’s doing is a MAGA-style trolling exercise in the middle of a fatal outbreak. He was literally trying to ban any screening process to find out who was vaccinated. It just depends on information. So he’s the one trying to restrict information in a very 1984-esque way while claiming he’s for freedom and liberty. How do you know the line has been crossed? I’ll give you a reason. A federal judge recently blocked Florida’s attempt to ban this type of vaccine information by saying that vaccine documents or passports cannot simply be banned by the state. It’s not how Governor DeSantis can stop private companies. He tried that too. “
At this point, the governor doesn’t care about protecting the people of his state. He’s only interested in waging the culture war that he believes Republicans are asking of him.
